Suicide Rates Have Spiked up.
|
Since the tragic hit of Hurricane Maria, there has been a significant tilt in the numbers of people that have taken their own lives. In the past five months alone there has been at the very least 103 suicide cases in the island, compared to the 253 deaths last year, and the the 196 in 2016 which have been the lowest rates in two decades. Over 5,000 people with suicidal ideas called the Linea PASS, a government helpline, from September to January. However, because of the lack of available phone service that exist on the island, these calls were low between the months of September and October. Thankfully once phone service was re-established and the number of calls shot up, as opposed to the previous year as it only saw about 3,000 calls coming in. |
